Are we about to lose our Raison d’Être? Is the Zombie Apocalypse on the verge of collapse, having never been?
The news is bad – or very good, depending upon your point of view. The fight to identify a drug that would destroy modern bacteria has been a losing battle of late – until now. A pan-national group of scientists have gone back to basics to look for the answer and seem to have come up trumps. In the grassy fields of Maine a bug exists that produces a chemical called Teixobactin that was capable of being isolated. It kills a wide variety of bugs including MRSA. It isn’t THE answer as it doesn’t kill E. coli among a few other nasties but this discovery through ‘left-field’ thinking illustrates the fact that ‘normal’ antibiotic research will have to get more creative in order to solve the current antibiotic crisis. Just think, in a couple of years there might exist an injection that really does cure all of what ails ya! You’ll be able to go to hospital with one ailment and not be carried out feet first by something entirely different.
And now for the big question: will it be possible to cure the Zombie infection and stop the Zombie Apocalypse in its tracks? Well, provided it is a bacterial infection and considering Teixobactin comes from soil microbes, it might just be poetic justice of a sort, from the ground they will return to the ground.
Ashes to ashes,
Dust to dust,
Kill all the Zombies,
It is a must!
